Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Millions of people are affected each year and the numbers continue to rise. Tanning beds and the image media puts out that "tanner is better" has people as young as 15 years old excessively tanning. This article from the Cancer Research Institute explains what Melanoma is and how to spot and prevent it. Melanoma begins as a skin cell called a melanocyte, they produce the skin pigment that gives us our natural skin color. When exposed to sunlight they produce melanin to help protect the skin form burning. Moles can form from this which are groups of the melanocytes, they can be harmless but they can also be cancerous. Just because you are naturally tan or have darker skin does not mean you are safe from this. Anyone can get skin cancer. People with fair skin or red and blonde hair do have a higher risk, but that doesn't not mean everyone else is in the clear. The site gives a detailed description and pictures of what a normal mole should look like and what a cancerous mole looks like. If you see any mole that looks suspicious you should get it checked out IMMEDIATELY. The longer you wait the more at risk you are for the cancer to spread. There are different treatments for curing melanoma, depending on the severity of it. This is a serious disease that most people don't seem to take seriously until it is too late. Don't be one of those people and always wear sunscreen! Even in winter they say!
